2023 Week Three Painting Blog

Monday

The new base toppers are working well, but there’s only the one design I found online so they’re all a bit similar. I need to crack on with Blender really.

Somehow I managed to finish Tannenbaum already and I’m a good way into Mr Ngaatoro with nearly all the basecoats blocked in.

Tannenbaum

I’ve used some contrast paints as washes on Tannenbaum so I’ve had to knock the shinyness down using AK Interactive Ultra Matt Varnish. This is the mattest varnish I’ve found so far and since Pro-Acryl paints are already very matt it’s very noticable when you don’t use it.

Tuesday

More work on the Explorer’s Society starter box. Nearly finished Mr Ngaatoro.

Wednesday

Finished Mr Ngaatoro and started working on the two hopeful prospects, which are the sculpts in the set which interest me the most.

Thursday

So the Hopeful Prospects. They’re dressed in brown in the imagery but those are pith helmets and very 1800s clothes so a nice ligher tan felt more appropriate. These are the two models in the box that interested me the most, the other two are really just men in slightly victorian clothing.

Friday

I’m quite pleased that even though it’s been a hellish week with work I’ve managed to get at least a bit of painting in every day. I’ll stop if I get burnt out of course as trying to push through that just doesn’t work.

Saturday

Finished off the models for the two Hopeful prospects, just the bases to go.

More Warhammer Imperium issues arrived today. I really need to get on top of them this year.

Sunday

And that’s the Explorer’s guild starter done.

Well the starter sets are an interesting product. Models that actually work better as an expansion to a core set, but then they’re less useful than getting a more focused keyword box next. Also the models are the type of plastic I hate, so have softer detail and are a real pain to clean up. Still it’s worth it for the hopeful prospects for me.

As I finished off the bases I assembled issue 74 of Imperium: The Firestrike Servo-Turret. I have mixed feelings about this model. On one hand it’s a silly flack turret looking thing that probably doesn’t have a sensible place on the tabletop in 40k, but on the other hand it’s a perfect diorama piece that deserves to have something nice built around it. I shan’t be doing that though so I assembled and primed it quickly.

The marine is huge! Well it is compared to painting Malifaux stuff anyway. Chonky detail and a simple paint scheme should see this finished pretty soon (cue it taking a month).

The easy to build press fit GW models really are nice. No glue, easy to assemble and a quality model that doesn’t look like it’s the easy to build newbie friendly stuff.

I need to add a 40k section to this site now though to hold it.

Then I assembled the Necron Heavy Destroyer from issue 73 so that’s half the models this month built. I have a rusty colour scheme for my Necrons and so I’m looking forwards to painting it.
